Local associations throughout North Carolina are on the prowl for new members during November! Locals are encouraged to choose a day(s) to focus on new member recruitment.
To encourage participation and reward those who recruit towards this effort, NAHB will award double spike credits for new members recruited in November. In the spirit of competition, local associations are competing for highest percentage of members recruited in their association grouping. The top individual recruiter in each association grouping will be recognized as well. Bonded Builders Home Warranty has also added an incentive to their “Spirit of Membership Program” to assist NCHBA’s efforts in November. The NCHBA Associate Members Committee will host the seminar “Selling to Green Builders” on December 10 during the NCHBA 4th Quarter Board Meeting. This seminar, lead by industry expert Steve Monroe of SME & Associates and Dan McFarland with Southern Energy Management, will offer advice on what "green" is and how to enhance your selling green sales skills.

The N.C. Home Builders Association will be moving to its new location on Thursday, Oct. 30. We will be out of contact for all of Thursday and Friday, including phones and computers. The House Construction as a Selling Tool class offered by the HBA of Raleigh-Wake County on November 20-21, 2008, still has openings.
HCST can be used as designation credits for Master CSP and elective credits for CMP and MIRM. It can also be used for continuing education credits for CAPS, CGA, CGB, CGR and GMB designations.
The cost of the class is $350 for members and $450 for non-members. Roger Fiehn, MIRM, is the instructor.
This will be the first TSMC class in the new HBA of Raleigh-Wake Co. location at 5580 Centerview Drive #115 in Raleigh.
The EPA's new Lead Paint: Renovation, Repair and Painting rule will affect everyone who does renovation, repair and painting projects that disturb lead-based paint inside homes or child-occupied facilities built before 1978.
In short, the Lead Paint: Renovation, Repair and Painting rule requires an eight-hour training session, new work practices including cleaning verification and keeping records for three years. The rule also prohibits some work practices.
NAHB's Audio Seminar, "The EPA's New Lead Paint Rule: What it Means For You" will present a panel of experts on remodeling and lead paint issues who will explain the LRRP rule in full detail. You'll find out (1) exactly what the rule requires; (2) what changes you'll need to make to comply; and (3) where you can go for more information and resources. You'll also get the chance to ask questions of NAHB's expert panel.
The seminar is scheduled for Oct. 28. Check out the EPA's Web site to get the basics on the LRRP rule.

The Green Building for Building Professionals Course is being offered by the High Country HBA on Wednesday, Nov. 5, through Thursday, Nov. 6, with the Business Management Course on Friday, Nov. 7. Classes are from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. each day at Builders Plaza in Boone, NC.

The Lake Norman HBA University now offers the NCBI Accreditation Program as part of their program of classes! No longer will you have to drive to Raleigh for your NCBI designation courses. Classes are being held at Mitchell Community College in Mooresville, N.C., on a monthly basis. The cost for HBA members is $180 per 8 hours and $95 per 4 hours. Upon completion, builders receive this prestigious designation not only with NCBI, but also with the North Carolina Licensing Board for General Contractors.
Housing Stimulus 'Sorely Needed' As Downside Risks Pile Up, NAHB Chief Economist Says
Congress should consider providing further “sorely needed” economic stimulus to encourage homeownership and limit foreclosures in order to pull the U.S. economy out of recession, NAHB Chief Economist David Seiders said today at the association’s Fall Construction Forecast Conference.
The steep decline in sales of new single-family homes should be coming to an end in early 2009, Seiders said, setting the stage for “tepid” improvement in new residential construction later that year. However, he warned, that outcome has grown increasingly uncertain in light of the turmoil that has gripped world financial markets. Click here to read the entire story
David Crowe To Replace David Seiders As NAHB's Chief Economist David Crowe, who has been the Senior Staff Vice President for Regulatory and Housing Policy at the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) since 2002, has been named the association’s Chief Economist, effective November 17. He replaces David Seiders, who recently announced his retirement after serving as NAHB’s Chief Economist for more than 20 years.
“Dave Crowe is uniquely qualified to fill this demanding position,” said Jerry Howard, NAHB’s President and CEO. “Not only is he a highly regarded economist, he has extensive experience in housing finance and housing policy. Sergeant Joey Bozik and his wife Jayme were given the keys to a brand new home on October 27 as part of the project Operation: Coming Home, which honors war veterans with a brand new home.
Bozik is one of only a few surviving triple amputee war veterans in the United States. Oct. 27 is a significant date in Joey's life, as it is also the date that he woke up from a coma after he was injured in a bomb explosion.
Operation: Coming Home started as a collaborative effort between the Triangle Real Estate and Construction Veterans (TREACV) and The Military Veterans Task Force (MVTF), a special group formed through the Home Builders Association of Raleigh-Wake County. The group asked the Armed Forces Foundation (AFF) to identify a deserving soldier and Joey was selected to receive the group's first "Hero's Home."
The home, located in Southern Oaks Community in Fuquay-Varina, was built and donated by the Royal Oaks Building Group and Atreus Homes and Communities. The land was donated by Gaines and Company and Royal Oaks Building Co. The HBA of Raleigh-Wake County gave a cash donation of $25,000, and the Triangle Builders Guild donated $10,000. Stock Building Supply donated all construction materials.
NCHBA President-Elect Frank Wiesner of Olde South Homes was recently awarded the William C. Bass Leadership Award by the N.C. Association of REALTORS® Housing Opportunity Foundation, which honors housing industry leaders for working to keep housing affordable for working North Carolinians.
Wiesner led the 2008 Habitat for Humanity Builder Blitz in Durham, Orange and Chatham Counties, organizing hundreds of contributors and thousands of volunteers to complete 10 homes, spread across three counties, in five days and at no cost to Habitat.

Congratulations to Matthew Sherrill of Innovative Cabinet Co. in Mooresville for placing first in the 23rd Annual Carpentry Apprentice Contest at the N.C. State Fair. Sherrill competed against 15 other apprentices in the five-hour contest that requires apprentices to read a blueprint to construct a project that demonstrates skills learned through training.
Matthew Whitehart, a high school apprentice with Zack Rothrock Builders, finished in second place. David Mathis, also a high school apprentice with Zack Rothrock Builders, placed third.
Buddy Hughes, past president of NCHBA, and NCHBA President Ray Rhodes helped judge the competition.
