September is Associate Member Appreciation Month and an opportunity for local and state association staffs and builder members to recognize the myriad contributions that associate members make.
September is the month to brag about our associate members and all that they do for our association and our businesses.
Here are just some of the contributions they make:
**They bring revenue to the association with their dues and sponsorship. They give this association the financial grounding it needs to do its work.
**They devote time to the association through their work on committees, councils and special projects. You can always count on associates to be there and pitch in to help.
So this month, be sure to thank and celebrate our associate members in a way that will really mean something to them......do business with them.

Scharnberg states:The HBA offers a powerful opportunity for networking, insurance for small businesses, and formal and informal education. The HBA works through various avenues to assure that the home building industry continues to be a strong industry giving us an opportunity to continue with our work of building homes. Another positive aspect of HBA membership and involvement is being able to contribute to the industry from which we have gained so much. And, on a lighter note, meetings and outings give us a chance to just have fun with our peers and friends.

The 21st Annual Carpentry Apprenticeship Contest will be held at the N.C. State Fairgrounds on October 19, 2006. This year's contest will be the most exciting and challenging contest to date.
Thanks to all of you who have given your time and effort to make this contest the success that it is. As all of you are aware, the pool of trained carpenters is not there as it was in the past. The apprenticeship program offers us a viable way of providing ourselves with a trained pool of carpenters. This contest not only shows the apprentices enrolled in the program and how much value we place on them, it also shows the citizens of North Carolina the value that we place upon our human resources.
In order for us to hold a contest this year, we again must call upon you to support this effort. We are badly in need of monies to meet expenses that will be incurred during the contest. It is only through the support of the Building Industry that we can make this a success for the apprentices and for you.
Please make your checks payable to:
N.C. Carpentry Apprenticeship Contest Committee and mail them to:

The Institute for Emerging Issues is a think tank affiliated with North Carolina State University. The Institute grew out of the Emerging Issues Forum, established in 1986 by former Governor James B. Hunt, Jr., to provide focused attention on emerging issues affecting North Carolina.
According to The Institute's website, "The Institute is a catalyst for innovative public policy through a policy process that rests upon a belief in the importance of authentic deliberation among interested citizens as the basis for effective and moral representative government. "
To further advance discussion which began in February 2006 regarding North Carolina's tax and finance system, the Institute is organizing five community forums across the state in September and October. The stated purpose of these Community Forums is to marry local ideas and issues with the larger tax and finance themes developed at last February's Forum.
The Community Forums will be held in Manteo, Asheville, Fayetteville, Winston-Salem and Charlotte. While the tax system portions of the agenda are the same, each forum will feature issues specific to the region. Most forums will include a session on financing school growth. For this reason, we believe that NCHBA members and EOs should attend meetings in their area.

Don't miss the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency's 2006 Housing Forumon Wednesday, October 11, at the Joseph S. Koury Convention Center in Greensboro. "The Building Challenge" will explore the obstacles sometimes encountered in affordable housing development and how they can be effectively addressed.
The Forum will feature keynote speaker Debra Stein, president of GCA Strategies, a San Francisco-based public affairs firm that specializes in building community and political support for controversial land use projects. She will discuss NIMBY-ism and how you can work to prevent it from derailing your development plans.
Breakout sessions will focus on tax credit development and compliance, reasonable accommodation and modification rights for housing applicants with disabilities, how to plan a successful opening for your new development, how to develop "healthy" housing, enterprising ways to help fund your nonprofit's mission, and the Annual Developers' Workshop.
In addition, for the first time ever, the N.C. Housing Finance Agency will offer its Realtor® Continuing Education Course: Borrow With ConfidenceT at the Forum. Current trends, opportunities and obstacles in the home buyer market will be discussed during the four-hour CE course, which was developed by the NCHFA, the N.C. Association of Realtors®, HOMES4NC, the N.C. Real Estate Educational Foundation, Inc., and Fannie Mae. The course also will explain the affordable mortgage programs of the NCHFA and Fannie Mae.
The Forum includes a special luncheon honoring winners of the 17th annual Housing North Carolina Awards, and an afternoon reception.
Membership Committee Vice Chair Brant Rosson (right) awards Duke Geraghty the President's Cup during NCHBA's 2nd Quarter Board of Directors Meeting. The President's Cup is a challenge from the membership committee to lead by example. The award goes to the member of the executive committee who recruits the most members in a year. Geraghty brought in 16 new members, followed by Region X Vice President Paul Taylor with 14 new members.
Regional vice president builds relationships, membership (and homes!)
If he's learned anything during his more than 33 years in the remodeling and new home construction business, Joseph "Duke" Geraghty, North Carolina Home Builders Association Region II Vice President, has learned this: Being a successful builder has more to do with building relationships than anything else.
So no wonder he excels at recruiting new home builder members. In fact, in a competition with other Executive Board members, he recently earned the NCHBA's President's Cup for recruiting the most new members in a year. During 2005, Geraghty recruited 16 new members to the 600-member Outer Banks Home Builders Association. This was his second year in a row to earn the award. To read the full story click here.
