Clay County Voters Reject Land Transfer Tax, Pushing Streak to 21-0 |
Responding to the Clay County Commissioners' tactic of scheduling a special election on the Friday before Labor Day in a manner not expected, Clay County voters overwhelmingly thumped the land transfer tax by a margin of 61% to 39%. This pushes the successful election streak of rejecting the land transfer tax to 21-0.
This remarkable achievement was again the product of the special partnership that NCHBA has established with the NC Association of Realtors. With the Realtors’ David McGowan expertly coordinating the campaign from his command center on the ground in Clay County for three weeks before the election executing a great game plan from our political consultants (including NCHBA alumnus Alastair Macaulay), Clay County voters responded by turning out in record numbers (32%) in this single-issue election. Jessi Hayes coordinated NCHBA's participation in this coalition.
"This voter turn-out was greater than that of the May primary and is a testament to superior campaign planning, dogged execution and adequate resources," said Mike Carpenter, NCHBA Executive Vice President. "It was critical that the county's scheduling tactic be soundly rejected. I am delighted that the voters recognized this tactic for what it was and took the time to vote it down. In doing so, Clay County voters have sent a message well beyond the borders of their county."
Carpenter continued, "With this latest rejection, our coalition has clearly demonstrated that we can beat this ballot initiative however it is presented to the voters. We have produced the same success whether the election has been scheduled for an off-year general election, a Presidential primary or a special election."
"With our NCAR-NCHBA partnership now 21-0, reasonable people would conclude that this dog won’t hunt. Unfortunately, this message has not gotten through to all as it now appears that we will be facing at least two more referenda in November—Polk County and Tyrell County (again)," Carpenter stated.
The final Clay County vote total was 1,603 against and 1,038 for (with more than 1,200 early votes cast). |
