On Wednesday, Jan. 28, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a so-called economic stimulus package. This legislation failed to adequately address the major problems facing the housing industry, both in North Carolina and nationwide. The only housing stimulus provision in this bill eliminated the repayment requirement of the $7,500 first-time home buyer tax credit enacted in July 2008. This is an inadequate response to the crisis facing our industry.

Asheville, N.C. builders Jim Preish and Mallory Fuller of Preish Construction, Inc. have been selected for membership in the Southern Living Custom Builder Program.
Preish Construction is one of 100 builders chosen for the 16th year of the exclusive Southern Living builder program. Each year, Southern Living carefully selects members based on their reputation among local businesses and consumers; strength of presence in their respective markets; superior quality and attention to detail; innovative style; and other criteria. Builders also have access to the entire Southern Living House Plans Service collection, which includes more than 800 plans created by respected architects and designers throughout the nation.
“The builder program is a natural extension of our overall homes effort, which aims at offering quality designs and new ideas to consumers across the Southeast,” said Brent Warren, Manager of the Southern Living Builder Program. “We believe we have chosen outstanding builders across the region to help us do this.”
Preish Construction, a member of Asheville HBA, is the only company from Asheville participating in the program, and one of only about 15 in North Carolina.
Onslow County Professional Women in Building took on their first Habitat for Humanity project in January when they helped build a new home for Jessica Atherton in Jacksonville. The project is part of Women's Build Day for Habitat for Humanity. The home is expected to be completed sometime this summer and will be a home for Atherton and her two children.
The Home Builders Association of Charlotte recognized two outstanding members at a dinner in January for their dedicated service to the association.
Elliot Mann of Standard Pacific Homes was named 2008 Distinguished Builder of the Year. Mann served on the Home Builders Association of Charlotte’s Board of Directors for a number of years. In 2007 he served as the president of the Association. Mann is a well-known industry advocate and currently serves as Chair of the HomeAid Board of Directors, a charity that provides shelter for people in transition. In 2008, under Mann’s leadership, 44 beds were added to the Men’s Uptown Shelter. In addition, Mann spearheaded the Association’s 1st annual Cornerstone Awards, which recognize the many hard-working superintendents in the home building industry.
Tammy Nash, of Carter Land Surveyors and Planners, was awarded the 2008 Distinguished Associate of the Year. She has been active in the home building industry in Charlotte since 2005. Nash has been active in the Home Builders Care Council for several years. Nash chaired the Council in 2008, and under her leadership the Council provided numerous home repairs that enabled elderly residents to remain in their homes. Along with the staff of A Child’s Place, she led a group of Home Builder members in a project to refurbish two apartments for homeless children and their families. More than 30 HBAC builder and associate members participated in this inspiring project. Nash’s energy and on going efforts on behalf of the Council provided a great deal of support to citizens of our community.
