The Home Builders Association (HBA) of Durham, Orange & Chatham Counties presented 18 scholarships to graduating seniors from area high schools at a banquet attended by 150 people on April 21. The event, held at The Friday Center in Chapel Hill, was the HBA’s 12th Annual Awards Night. Over $120,000 in scholarships have been presented during that time.
Durham Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Carl Harris was the featured speaker for the evening. He expressed his gratitude for programs such as this one that provide vital support to students who are going to college. “Particularly this year, you could have said we just can’t do it,” Dr. Harris noted. “In the tough times you really find out what people value and it is obvious that the home builders value the futures of these young people.”
The students who were awarded $1,000 scholarships and their high schools are as follows:

Nathan Aaronson, Charles E. Jordan; Hannah Boatright, Northern; Alexandria Carroll, Orange; Eric Confer, Orange; Alyssa Cooper, Northern; Joseph Dallke, Chapel Hill; Paul Drumheller, Jordan-Matthews; Cliff Joyce, Chatham Central; Kristin Lassiter, Riverside; Tyler Lunsford, Orange; Coty Mason, Jordan-Matthews; Hank McKee, Orange; Cory Nordwall, Chapel Hill; Tate Sasser, Riverside; Stephen Starr, Orange; Nick Wilson, Northwood; Sam Wilson, Orange; Alexander Young, East Chapel Hill
“We are very proud to have the chance to meet and acknowledge these young men and women," said Bo Root, 2009 HBADOC President. "Their achievements at such a young age are simply amazing and speak very well of the future to which we can look forward.”
HBA scholarships are awarded based on academic record, extracurricular activities, recommendations and future course of study. Children of members of the HBA and those planning to study construction-related majors are given preference, but more than 75% of this year’s recipients are not children of members and about 1/3 are planning courses of study outside the construction industry. The application period each year is January - March.

Mat Hamlett of Orange High School was honored as the second annual HBA of Durham, Orange & Chatham Counties Construction Trades Teacher of the Year at the group’s annual Schoarship Awards Banquet April 21. The Construction Trades Teacher of the Year Award is given to reward outstanding educators in the secondary school system in a construction-related class.
Mr. Hamlett has taught for the past 17 years at Orange High School. His program has included practical experience for students through the construction of an annual project house. Previously built at various sites around the county, since 2001 homes have been built on the campus and then moved to sites designated by the purchasers.
Introducing the awardee, Bo Root, HBADOC President, said, “This year he attended the Green Home Building certification course offered through the NAHB and has been incorporating green building aspects in the class work – including advanced framing techniques that are part of that certification. His students benefit from that sort of awareness in many other ways – field trips to various suppliers and job sites bring them current information on the industry and insure that the classroom work never feels stale or irrelevant.”
Hamlett, in accepting the award, emphasized the importance of the support his students received through the HBA scholarship program. “I’m proud to receive this award,” he said, “but I am even happier about the students who are going to receive scholarship awards – they’ve worked hard and they deserve it.”
Mr. Hamlett will receive a $500 in material to be used in his classes from Builders FirstSource. As the local HBA winner, he will go on to compete for the North Carolina Home Builders Construction Trades Teacher of the Year award.
