The annual North Carolina SkillsUSA contest was held April 15 at the Koury Convention Center in Greensboro. The state's most talented students in secondary and postsecondary school vied for the highest honor in nearly 90 contests.
The North Carolina Home Builders Association was a proud sponsor of the carpentry contest, where 58 students from across the state showcased their skills. Congratulations to Nick Simpson of West Carteret High School, who came away with first place honors. Nick will go on to compete in the national contest in Kansas City. NCHBA members Brian Robinett, Buddy Hughes, Erik Anderson, Ray and Bernice Rhodes, Don Betsworth, Hershel Redding, Ron Adams and John Mertz of BMIC, Skip Saunders, and Kaye Leonard helped judge the competition.
NCHBA would like to thank Smith-Phillips Building Supply and J.D. Irvin, 84 Lumber, Precision Wall and Pella for their donations and time.
In addition, John David Privott, son of NCHBA Director of Codes and Construction Robert Privott, won 1st place for his region in the masonry contest. His brother, Alexander, also competed in the automotive service technology competition.
